Legionella bacteria, the causative agent of legionellosis, are commonly detected in fresh water including manmade water systems such as cooling towers, hot and cold water supply systems, pools and spas. This organism poses a significant threat to human health, particularly for individuals with weakened immune system due to age or medical conditions. New guidelines and regulations in recent years have put new emphasis on water management, treatment and testing protocols to reduce or eliminate exposure to Legionella bacteria. In this presentation we will provide introductory information to better understand the causative organism of legionellosis, its ecology and pathology. We will also discuss water risk management and sampling as well as modern methods and technologies for the detection, enumeration and remediation of Legionella bacteria.

Topics include:
• ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 188-2015
• CDC Toolkit
• New York legislation

• Design and execution of a sampling plan
• Laboratory analytical methods and interpretation of results

• Recommended action thresholds for contamination
• Methods and applications for eradicating Legionella contamination
